After working for some years in a company, every employee would like to have a pay rise. There are annual or a quarterly bonus for almost every employee of the company. But sometimes, you want to ask for a pay rise because you think you deserve it. 

No matter how confident you feel, negotiating a pay rise with your boss and the hiring manager is always feel like a scary task. You don’t know how they will respond or whether you get it or not. Step No.1 Do some Study and Research on your Company and Employer

Don’t just go and ask for a rise. This action won’t bring any fruitful results. Instead, some time and do some research on your employer’s pay rise pattern, policies and plans.

Listen to what your employer says about a pay rise. Many employers are candid about their plans. To motivate their employees, they often say “Do this task and expect something good from my side”. 

Indirectly inquire about your employer pay rise habits. Sit with other colleagues ( who are old employees of the company) in a casual environment and then bring up “Pay rise” like its a general topic. Since it is among the favourite subject of almost every employee, therefore you can expect some honest response.

If you read your employee handbook thoroughly, then you will know all about companies policies. Some companies have strict rules of a 4 percent pay rise every year for all employees. If that is the case with your company, you might be putting all your effort for a very tough case. 

After working for years, you have a clear idea about your employer’s pay rise habit since you observe him. If he is a type of employer who doesn’t mind giving an increment to a good performer, then asking for a pay rise is worth a shot.

However, never give a person a reason for a pay rise. If you need money, don’t say that. It’s not your employer’s responsibility to fulfil those needs.

You need to give him a specific amount. In case you don’t know how much should you ask for a rise then simple formula here is to ask for 10 or 20 percent more. Don’t be greedy. Keep a specific number in mind.

Step No.5 Plan a Meeting

Many employees make a mistake, and they write an email or letter to their hiring manager when they are expecting a pay rise. It is better to ask-in-person. You can plan a meeting with your employer and also tell him what this meeting is about. Don’t blindside him, and he won’t like it. When you say to him that this meeting is all about a salary increase, he will check your past work record and ready to hear from you. 

Step No.6 Make a Presentation

Instead of sitting on a chair in front of him, you better in front of him and give an excellent presentation. Explain your worth to him by providing real-life examples of your work achievements. It would help if you had a ready script to talk about yourself and your work life. If he doesn’t respond right away, don’t push him. 

Step No.7 Thank You Email 

Send a thank-you email to tell him how much you appreciate him sitting with you and listening to whatever you have to say about a pay rise.

Step No.8 Follow up Email

Employers always take time when responding to pay rise request of an employee. If he doesn’t respond to you during meetings. There is no harm in sending a followup email and asking for his decision. Be friendly and polite.
